Full Moon Magic: Ayurveda & Yogic Practices for Balance & Connection
The full moon has long been a source of inspiration and wonder across cultures and spiritual practices. In Ayurveda and yoga, the full moon holds a special place as a time of heightened energy, reflection, and renewal. For those of us who believe in the interconnectedness of all beings and energies, it’s a reminder of the delicate web of existence that connects us to nature and each other.
As a second-generation Clairsentient witch and dedicated Ayurvedic practitioner, I’ve always been drawn to the natural cycles of the moon. Since 2019, shortly after discovering Ayurveda, I began incorporating these two practices into my full moon rituals—finding a beautiful synergy between their teachings. But don’t worry, you don’t have to identify as spiritual or “woo woo” to appreciate the powerful energies the full moon brings. There’s something in these practices for everyone, even those who approach the world through a more grounded, scientific lens.
The Full Moon and Ayurveda: A Time for Reflection
In Ayurveda, the moon is considered a source of cooling, calming energy—qualities that are especially beneficial for soothing the fiery Pitta dosha and balancing the anxious energy of Vata. During the full moon, our bodies and minds are more attuned to the ebb and flow of nature’s energy, making it the perfect time for reflection and introspection.
The full moon is a time to pause, breathe, and ask yourself: What am I holding on to that no longer serves me? What do I want to invite into my life moving forward?
By tuning into this energy, we can make conscious decisions about how we want to feel and what habits we want to carry with us into the next lunar cycle.
Yogic Practices for the Full Moon
Yoga offers a number of practices that are well-suited to the full moon’s energy. Here are some gentle, grounding practices you can incorporate into your full moon rituals:
Moon Salutations (Chandra Namaskar): While Sun Salutations energize and invigorate, Moon Salutations are designed to create a sense of calm and connection. These gentle, flowing movements help balance the mind and body and bring a sense of harmony to your practice.
Full Moon Meditation: A quiet, reflective meditation can help you attune to the energy of the moon. Focus on your breath, allowing yourself to feel connected to the earth beneath you and the sky above. Let go of any thoughts or emotions that feel heavy, and visualize yourself absorbing the moon’s cooling energy.
Pranayama (Breathwork): Cooling breaths like Sheetali (curling the tongue and inhaling) or Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) can help balance the fiery energy of Pitta and soothe the nervous system, making them ideal for full moon practice.
Spiritual Practices & Rituals
For those who resonate with the more mystical side of the full moon, this time is a potent one for ritual and manifestation. As a Clairsentient witch, I love incorporating practices that honor the earth and the energy of the moon.
Here are a few ideas for simple full moon rituals:
Moon Water: Place a jar of water under the moonlight overnight. The next morning, you can use this moon-charged water in your daily routine—whether it’s for sipping mindfully, watering plants, or anointing yourself as part of a meditation or gratitude practice.
Cleansing Rituals: Use the full moon to energetically cleanse your space. You can light a bundle of sage or palo santo (if sustainably sourced) or use sound healing, such as bells or a singing bowl, to clear stagnant energy from your environment.
Journaling: Write down anything you’re ready to release—whether it’s old habits, negative thoughts, or self-doubt. Under the full moon, set the intention to let go of these things and make space for new growth.
Interconnectedness: Ayurveda & the Web of Existence
At the core of both Ayurveda and my own spiritual beliefs is the idea that everything is connected. Just as Ayurveda views the body as an interconnected system—where mind, body, and spirit influence one another—so too do I believe that we are all linked to the natural world and the energies that surround us.
During the full moon, I like to take extra time to reflect on this interconnectedness. By aligning ourselves with the cycles of nature, we can find deeper balance and harmony within ourselves. Whether you resonate with this idea from a spiritual perspective or simply appreciate the grounding effect of being in tune with nature, the full moon is a perfect opportunity to reconnect and reflect.
